Most people enjoy going to a social gathering whether it be an after-work office get together, or simply a birthday party. It’s a chance to get out and talk to friends or even make new ones while having a good time. But there are some people for whom social gatherings are something to be feared. These people suffer from social anxiety which is sometimes crippling. But there are ways to combat the sometimes-overwhelming fear that sets in at the thought of attending a social gathering.
Sometimes it helps to plan for a social gathering. If you’re familiar with the place, try to find a quiet less crowded area to begin and then slowly work your way out to the more crowded areas. Plan on finding a few friends that you feel comfortable around and stay close to them until you feel comfortable enough to start mingling. Always know where you friends and quiet places are in case you start feeling anxious and need to calm down.
Planning for a way out may also help in case you feel the need to make a quick exit. Drive your own car so that you don’t have to depend on someone for a ride, that person may not want to leave when you do. Be ready with Uber or Lyft in case you need a ride.
Releasing as much stress as possible before attending a social engagement. Do housework or have a good workout. Burning off excess adrenaline can help your nervous system remain more regulated which will help you keep cool.
Have some conversation topics ready so that it will be easier to strike up a conversation. You can also have a few conversation starting questions ready.
Learning to overcome the fear of social gatherings will help you in many areas of your life. Attending one social event will make it easier to go to the next and so on.
